ENERGY Minister Conrad Enill will host fellow energy ministers from 12 African countries at a conference in Trinidad and Tobago on May 11 and 12, he told yesterday's post Cabinet media conference at the Diplomatic Centre.
He recalled that at the June, 2007 Eighth Ordinary Session of the African Union, Prime Minister Patrick Manning had offered to share TT's expertise to help African countries develop their energy sectors.
“He made an offer to the African countries in which he indicated that Trinidad and Tobago had acquired a wealth of expertise in the energy sector, particularly with respect to diversification, and was willing to share this expertise with them.”
Enill said that in the interim, several African countries had variously visited TT to meet different stakeholders. He named the countries invited to the conference as Angola (which currently chairs OPEC), Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Cote d'Ivoire, Republic of Congo, Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Trinidad and Tobago could help the African countries with technical assistance in the growth and development of their energy sectors and related industries, he said. Other areas included the formation of State enterprises, drafting of petroleum legislation, including production-sharing contracts; establishment of petroleum-testing laboratories, human resource development, exploration and development activities, assistance in setting up a refinery, and a reduction of the flaring of natural gas. “All of this is intended to allow them to develop their energy sectors effectively.
