WORKERS at state-owned oil refinery, Petrotrin yet again timed their demonstration over outstanding money owed to them to coincide with the company's chairman Malcolm Jones' dialysis treatment at the Augustus Long Hospital at Pointe-a-Pierre.
Workers yesterday marched to the private hospital clamouring for the company to rethink its decision to stagger outstanding wages owed to them. Oilfield Workers Trade Union (OWTU) Pointe-a-Pierre branch secretary, Shaffick Hyatali, said the peaceful demonstration was to signal the workers' dissatisfaction over a decision to pay the outstanding variable wages in three installments.
“The workers have all agreed that they want their monies in one installment and not three because this is a violation of the agreement between the company and the union,” he said.
After the 20 minute-long demonstration, workers returned to the OWTU's headquarters at Paramount Building, Circular Road, San Fernando, where a senior union official advised them to prepare themselves for any eventuality.
Operations at the company's facilities, including the Pointe a Pierre refinery were unaffected.
