A team of investigators from Canada-based Potash Corporation has been despatched to investigate the explosion at PCS Nitrogen Complex, Point Lisas.
PCS Nitrogen is a subsidiary of Potash Corporation, the world's largest fertiliser enterprise.
The ammonia plant where the incident happened last Thursday, has been shut down indefinitely. The plant produces 2,200 tonnes of ammonia a day-worth more than US$1.5 million at current market prices.
The Express learnt yesterday that extensive damage was done to the plant's processing equipment, and it may be a month before repairs are completed and the operations certified by safety officers.
Four other plants on the complex have resumed operations after safety checks.
The explosion, which was heard more than a mile away, was followed by a fire. But the company's emergency response units and the State's fire services were able to contain the blaze. There were no injuries.
