The upcoming Fifth Summit of the Americas in Port of Spain no doubt will offer Trinidad and Tobago a unique opportunity to take a serious look at broad trade and business ventures in the huge market in Latin America.
The event will bring together Government and business leaders from Latin American nations with whom Trinidad and Tobago's public and private sector representatives will be able to interact and begin opening doors to new trade and business horizons.
In the area of trade, there are many opportunities that Trinidad and Tobago can tap into with a good measure of success. For example, Argentina is known for its agriculture and beef industries, while Brazil has a very strong agricultural industry highlighted by sugar and coffee production along with a world class footwear sector. Colombia, on the other hand, is noted for important textile sector and Venezuela, our closest South American neighbour, is a world leader in the energy industry.
A few days ago, diplomats from Panama and El Salvador told local business leaders that they should seriously consider tapping into the vast opportunities for investment in those Central American countries. In both cases, they said their countries were looking for people with expertise and investment capital to engage in several multi-billion dollar projects. Among those projects and spin-off ventures are the expansion of the Panama Canal and the proposed construction of El Salvador's liquefied natural gas plant and infrastructure work. In several other Latin American countries there are many other development projects that local businessmen can embrace. Also, Trinidad and Tobago can obtain a number of its food and industrial imports from several countries in the region, and possibly at far more attractive financial conditions.
No doubt these matters will be discussed at meetings during the forthcoming summit thereby opening new horizons for trade and business relations between Trinidad and Tobago and Latin America.
