Offshore transportation is, therefore, shifting from air to sea, with energy companies using specialised boats to take workers to and from their operating locations , says Simon Gill, chief executive officer of Bayfield Energy Limited.
Gill said it will be a money-saving exercise because "the cost of offshore transportation is very high and as the field gets older, it becomes necessary to reduce costs, and transportation is one of the items to be looked at."
He added that Bayfield Energy has already contracted one boat for use in its operations. "It takes us 15 minutes to get to the location, and there are adequate berthing facilities at Galeota and using the boats is safe."
Bayfield Energy Limited and Petrotrin have been awarded a new licence for the Galeota Block, located six nautical miles off the east coast of Trinidad. The company has a mandate to partner with Petrotrin to redevelop the Trintes field and explore opportunities along the Galeota Ridge.
Gill stated that in addition to the resuscitation of the existing wells, "the company proposes to drill seven exploratory wells offshore, out of which it is hoped to extract some 40 million barrels of oil".
