THE start of World Cup 2006 in Germany yesterday
has been cited as the reason for Petrotrin workers
stalling protest action for the weekend.
Workers
were upset that the negotiations between the company
and the Oilfields Workers Trade Union had reached
a dead end on Thursday night but they said they
exercised patience "just because of the games."
Workers,
however are concerned about the turn of events in
the negotiations with the State-owned oil company
refusing to settle on cost items.
Since
the negotiations began in December, agreement has
been reached on 25 out of the 35 major issues. Petrotrin's
OWTU Pointe-a-Pierre branch secretary Shaffick Hyatali
said the outstanding issues were all cost items
and were "the most important issues in the
negotiations."
The
negotiating team was locked in talks for some 26
hours from around 1p.m. on Wednesday, but had not
made any headway, he said.
