Work on the proposed gas to liquids plant to be
built at Pointe-a-Pierre has not received clearance
from the Environmental Management Authority and
is now not expected to begin until next year.
It was originally hoped that work
on the plant would have started later this year.
"Work cannot begin until we
get environmental assessment clearance from the
EMA," vice president of World Gas to Liquid
Inc, Peter Tijm, said yesterday.
He said the US$100 million plant
which will be owned jointly by GTL and State-owned
oil company Petrotrin is not now expected to start
construction before next year.
Tijm, who addressed members of the
South Trinidad Chamber of Industry and Commerce
monthly energy luncheon held at Soong's Great Wall
Restaurant, San Fernando said GTL was eager to start
construction but was awaiting clearance from the
EMA.
Alicia Charles, EMA communications
specialist, said: "A draft proposal by the
company was sent to the EMA and on examination of
the proposal it was found that it required an environmental
assessment clearance."
She said the application was received
earlier this week and was being processed.
The company will convert natural
gas to liquids, such as diesel and petrochemical
naphta.
The
new plant will be located at the Pointe a Pierre
refinery and during its construction stage some
400 workers will be employed.
