More than five years in the making, the project
agreement for the construction and operation of
the US$835 million fertiliser production complex
for Union Industrial Estate, La Brea was finally
signed yesterday by the groups involved.
The
complex, named First UAN Trinidad Ltd, comprises
equal ownership by the Ansa McAl Group, Terra Industries
of the United States and CF Industries also of the
United States.
First
UAN director and Ansa McAl chairman A Norman Sabga,
speaking at the signing at the Ministry of Information
and Public Administration offices in Port of Spain,
said that the complex will consist of five plants-
one ammonia plant, one urea plant, one nitric acid
plant and two UAN (Urea Ammonium Nitrate) plants.
Ansa
McAl will be responsible for providing 30 per cent
of the financing for the complex, which is the next
step in the establishment of the company.
Sabga
said that the availability of natural gas and a
stable political environment were two of the deciding
factors in the foreign involvement in the complex.
Minister
of Energy, Dr Lenny Saith, said that the project
was one of six value-added projects that are currently
in the energy pipeline.
