Gas
discoveries off Tobago, T’dad

The energy sector was abuzz yesterday with the news that PetroCanada
had made a gas discovery at its Tobago block exploration well.
What was unclear though was whether the gas was available in
commercial quantities.
In 2005, Petro-Canada signed production sharing contracts
for three blocks (1a and 1b in the Gulf of Paria and Block
22 off of Tobago).
These blocks were awarded in a 2003 licensing round.
Prime Minister
Patrick Manning, asked about the discovery at the Chamber
of Industry and Commerce’s business luncheon
yesterday, would only say, “I am not surprised.”
The wells
which are PetroCanada’s first operated assets
in the country, are highly prospective and have low to moderate
risk prospects, said the company’s web site. A seismic
survey began in Block 22 in late 2005; a survey in the other
two blocks commenced February 2006, it added.
Meanwhile,
Canadian Superior Energy has announced that the company and
its partners, BG International Limited and Challenger
Energy Corp have made a new natural gas discovery on their “Intrepid” Block
5(c) located approximately 60 miles off the east coast of Trinidad.
Canadian
Superior’s Chairman, Greg Noval, said he was
pleased to announce the discovery of natural gas on our first
well offshore Trinidad. “We are encouraged by the initial
test results.”
Speaking
in Calgary, Craig McKenzie, Canadian Superior’s
Chief Executive Officer, said, “The Victory well has
an estimated flowing rate of over 100 mmscf/d of natural gas
and is condensate rich.”
He said it had just completed the extended flow testing which
measured flow rates averaging between 40 and 45 mmscf/d. The
well, he said, also tested high gravity condensate of approximately
30 bbl per mmscf of gas produced and is comparable or better
than other producing wells and fields in the immediate area.
