In 2006, the sod was turned to build the AUM Complex at Pt Lisas industrial estate, Couva. On October 21, 2009, the AUM ammonia plant at the complex was commissioned. “Our AUM ammonia plant was placed on an accelerated construction path and has been completed and commissioned ahead of the rest of the complex,” said Rampersad Motilal, chief executive officer, Methanol Holdings (Trinidad) Ltd (MHTL), at the commissioning. The ammonia plant is now in full production. Dr Euric Bobb, chairman of MHTL, said construction of the AUM Complex was driven by MHTL’s strategic direction “to become a diversified company utilising gas and petrochemicals to create a strong and profitable global business.
“When completed, this project will enable the company to diversify its operations from a single commodity to a multiproduct enterprise adding value to that commodity onshore. “MHTL, one of the largest producers of methanol globally, will add three additional products to its mix: ammonia, urea ammonia nitrate (UAN) and melamine. “In developing this project, the company was mindful of the need to grow by exploiting its established strengths and core competencies. “The project is grounded firmly in the downstream end of the natural gas-based petrochemical processing sector where MHTL already has 25 years of successful performance,” Bobb said. MHTL is a world leader in its established business of producing methanol. Over the years, the company successfully consolidated its individual plants, namely, TTMC, CMC, and MIV and M5000—the largest in the world—into the enterprise known as MTHL.
