Prime
Minister Patrick Manning has announced that the
Government’s draft constitution will be laid
before the Parliament tomorrow.
He
made the announcement yesterday, during his feature
address at the national consultation on the Draft
White Paper on Local Government Reform 2006 at Crowne
Plaza Hotel, Wrightson Road, Port-of-Spain.
Manning
had first announced that former president Sir Ellis
Clarke led a team of experts on the redrafting of
the existing Constitution while the Draft White
Paper was laid in the House of Representative on
May 26, 2006.
“I
stated then that Sir Ellis Clarke would be producing
a draft constitution for public discussion,”
Manning said.
“This
document was recently presented to me by Sir Ellis
Clarke and will soon be available to the national
community for widespread discussion, together with
other documents which have already been published
for the same purpose.”
Both
Houses of Parliament have been on recess since July
and the House of Representatives will reconvene
tomorrow.
“I
wish to advise that the draft constitution prepared
by Sir Ellis Clarke and which will be laid in Parliament
tomorrow proposes a different approach, which is
worthy of very serious consideration,” he
said.
